Do Your Kids Struggle To Remember Capitalization and Spelling Rules for Nouns?

Okay, let’s talk about teaching nouns. It seems like a pretty simple thing to teach. We’re just talking about people, places, and things. Right?

Well, that’s a start. Identifying them is important but from there it gets more complicated. We have to teach students about…

  • Common vs proper
  • Singular vs plural
  • Possessive or not

Eventually, our students will also learn

  • Which words to capitalize
  • Spelling changes for plurals
  • Which plurals are irregular
  • When to use an apostrophe…

How can we keep students engaged?

Over the years, I’ve been given many different textbooks and workbooks to teach grammar. None of them were what I’d consider exciting. The daily grammar worksheets and workbook pages didn’t intrigue a single one of my students.

Let’s face it, grammar can be dry.

Yes, I used the grammar workbook, but ugh…it was boring! So, I starting putting my own stuff together.

Grammar is one of those topics that require a little extra effort to get kids engaged. However, the effort is so worth it. Seeing my kids excited and engaged to learn about the parts of speech makes my teacher heart happy.

How can we help our students learn the spelling and capitalization rules for nouns?

People, places, things, ideas….Most of the time kids are able to identify them fairly quickly, but once common and proper nouns are introduced it gets more complicated. It takes practice to master which words to capitalize in their writing.

One of the things that helped my kids identify if words were common or proper is this word sort. It makes a great center or small group activity.

I also made a set of posters to help them keep it all straight. These are back from my days teaching first grade and the basic part of speech, common vs. proper nouns, and singular vs. plural nouns. They were great for introducing the concepts and displaying them really helped support students needing a little extra support.
